Splitting is a common problem with epoxy resins on wood. These will be all sanded flat

Said to be an impossible repair by the experts, I found a way.

Ready to start. Focus on the moving damage first, then the original defects

Missing Piece

1939 Font (Baptismal)

The font was about 5" too tall for the new vessel. The goal was 42" tall with the new vessel. — Original

6-sides to represent the 6 days of creation, had to be adapted to an 8-sided vessel (post-creation). — Hexagon Start

Water damage from the years to the local bitternut hickory

Each piece was labeled to ensure it would fit back in place. — Labeling Everything

Disassembly included two bolts used to compensate for the stressed wood. — Top Disassembly

Note the severe stress from the knot that was causing the side to split. This is why the two bolts. — Stressed Post

Relieving the stress meant cutting a length-wise section... — Cutting Out Stress

...that would allow movement in the direction the wood — Perfect Alignment

Vessel is handmade so not a perfect octagon. Each part of the circle had be carved to fit each side. — Octagon to Circle Adaptation

The support was also hand-cut to fit each side. — 6 to 8

"Squared" and Leveled

This was made from pieces of the font post and same wood as the side supports. — Center Support

Hand-carved to fit the vessel bottom. This provides support at the strongest part of the vessel. — Vessel Support

French polish brings out the beauty of the wood and provides deep protection against water damage. — Beauty Restored!

Two coats of pre-cat lacquer seal the french polish.

Unique, Beautiful Antique Rocking Chair

This frame is a single piece of 1 x 1 oak bent to shape. The effort -- feat -- involved bending this must have been incredible, especially 100 years ago.
